“MIRACLE” ACNE CURE

SCOTS VOLUNTEERS TO BENEFIT FROM “MIRACLE” ACNE CURE

Scots hair and beauty expert Dawn Murray has joined forces with pioneering skin care guru, Rebecca Keppel-Page to offer young people in Scotland the opportunity to beat the scourge of acne.

Keppel-Page’s eight-week acne cure programme, SkinAid, which offers a holistic, drug-free approach to clear skin, has taken the beauty world by storm and now Murray, of Glasgow hair and beauty salon, Richardson Murray, wants to spread the word in Scotland.

The newly launched SkinAid Challenge is seeking 1000 acne sufferers to take part in an eight-week programme to achieve clear skin and Murray is desperate for young Scots to get in on the act.

According to mum-of-two Murray, 45, who suffered badly from acne herself as a teenager, the easy-to-follow, step-by-step solution will give Scots youngsters an affordable, straightforward method of dealing with what can be a devastating problem.

“I know from my own experience how awful it can be. Your self-confidence and self-esteem is non-existent and as a young person, that affects everything you do, from your school work to your social life.

“I’ve worked in the beauty industry now for over 20 years, and I’ve found a lot of the beauty product ranges are way out of people’s budget. Young people don’t have that kind of money but this is in the form of an e-book, which gives simple, sensible instructions on how to deal with problem skin.

“I‘d advise anyone with a problem to check out the SkinAid website and get in touch. It may sound dramatic but this could change the course of a young life.”

Over the course of the eight weeks, participants receive a copy of the SkinAid Challenge e-book which explains the process they will be following, a shopping list of essential products they will need to purchase from their local pharmacist or store, and complete support and guidance from SkinAid and their experts via the SkinAid website and forum.

SkinAid was set up by former acne sufferer, Rebecca Keppel-Page. “Millions of Brits are suffering needlessly from this devastating disease when the cure is so unbelievably simple,” she says.

“Acne is incredibly common, far too little talked about and plagues sufferers for years. But no longer will this plight continue. During the next eight weeks, one thousand lucky acne suffers will be rediscovering their beauty and learning how to stay clear skinned forever.”

The book has been praised by skincare professionals worldwide:

“Well written and with passion that comes from a personal journey. Thank you for bringing to light the truth about Ro Acutane (dreadful drug). Well done.”
Dr Danne Montague-King, Global Leader in the field of Skin Rejuvenation, USA

In addition to being an author and skincare expert, Keppel-Page runs the not-for-profit www.SkinAid.org.uk website and is an advisor to the beauty therapy industry with a regular column in the British Beauty Therapy Association’s magazine Vitality.

TODAY I’M WEARING. . .

Farzana Chaudry, salon coordinator at
Sunday Herald, The, Jul 6, 2008 by Interview: Ali Howard

I tend not to wear a lot of jewellery since most of my clothes have jewels and sequins on them. If I’ve not had clothes made for me in Pakistan for a while, I buy similar garments from Tesco, Primark and Asda and customise the pieces myself.

When I’m not at work, you’ll never see me in black, but for work, I’ll mostly wear black trousers and colourful tops. It’s a mix of Eastern and Western looks . . . I also do my eyes to match my outfits and have purple, grey and turquoise contact lenses that I swap regularly This top is made from material I bought in London and then took to a tailor in Pakistan. My sister lives in Pakistan and she moves around a lot, so for every new place in which I visit her, I end up meeting a new tailor.

This Jimmy Choo bag was a gift. I’ve had it since February and I’m really enjoying using it. On my ring is a kundan stone, which is made of melted gold. It’s from a particular region of Pakistan.

This scarf I bought in white in Pakistan, and then had it dyed and customised it myself with lots of ribbon. I customise all my clothes myself by sewing on beads, jewels, rhinestones - all of which I get in Pakistan.

These trousers were also made for me in Pakistan. The beading on the side was my inspiration.

These turquoise shoes are from Debenhams, bought to match my outfit. All of my shoes are very colourful - I have a pair in every shade. I’m not quite at the stage of having my shoes made for me, too, but that’ll be my next thing.

We Love Making You Look Good

How transforming others helped Dawn find success

Dawn travelled the world as a top hair stylist for 20 years before launching her own beauty salon three years ago. The 43-year-old from Blanefield, Stirlingshire, cut the hair of some of the world’s top athletes at the LA Olympics in 1984 and styled Kylie Minogue’s locks on tour.

The job: I own the Richardson Murray salon in Glasgow. I have 11 staff and am responsible for everything from HR to PR and day-to-day running of the salon.

How I did it: I was a stylist with Vidal Sassoon for 20 years, travelling the world doing shows and teaching. I received the best training and travelled to places like Hong Kong, Vietnam and America. The organisers of the 1984 Olympics set up two hair-styling camps where the athletes could come when not competing. I also styled Kylie’s hair when she was here in the past for concerts. I had an amazing time with Vidal Sassoon but the real challenge was to go out there and make my own decisions, so I took a break, had a baby, and decided to go it alone.

The business opened in 2004. I still cut hair but we have a beauty side, which includes non-invasive surgery such as Botox or Restylane injections. Most of our customers are over 35 but they are getting younger as they realise prevention is the best approach. Perks: Helping people achieve their desired look. It’s really satisfying.

Tips: I look for potential. If staff are keen and enthusiastic, I know I can develop the rest. It is not an easy business but the rewards are great.

A Peace of Paradise

After Years of city life. The Murrays moved to a cosy farmhouse in the countryside

ParadiseThe Murray family are living the good life after moving from a noisy city flat to a tranquil age-old farmhouse on the country. It’s been a year since former city-slickers Dawn and Allan, both 42, upped sticks with their boys Max, nine, and four-year-old Mitch. And they couldn’t be happier after swapping their pad in the trendy west end of Glasgow for their idyllic 19th-centrury retreat in rural Stirlingshire.

Allan said:” It’s the best move we’ve ever made. We’ve had challenges sice we’ve come here – we’ve been flooded, had to deal with a burst pipe and we lost electricity for a while in the winter. But even that couldn’t put us off.” “We’re so happy here and the quality of life for us and the boys is so much better than in the city. They’re off playing outdoors far more than they used to and they see wildlife on their doorstep – we keep chickens and there are wild rabbits running around and owls in our barn. It’s fantastic.” “A lot of families pile in the car at the weekend to come and see a place like this but we get to live here all year round. We just feel so lucky.” It’s easy to see where the couple’s enthusiasm comes from. There house lies at the end of a quiet private road and consists of a main farmhouse and two barn buildings. They plan to convert the barns to make up their main living accommodation and transform the main farmhouse into upmarket holiday accommodation. The buildings stand around an informal courtyard and beyond there are four acres of breathtaking mature woodland.

Moving to the country has meant a big change in lifestyle for Dawn, By day, she runs trendy west end hair salon Richardson Murray but in the evening she can’t wait to get home and change into her dungarees and wellies. She said: “It’s a bit strange – my work is fashion and image oriented but at home it couldn’t be more different. “I like the contrast. I love my work but I also can’t wait to get home to the country at the end of the day.” There is a living room, kitchen and three bedrooms on the ground floor of the house with a stunning master suite upstairs. The main living is an inviting whitewashed space with a warming slate heart and stove providing a cosy focal point. It leads through to a large conservatory with amazing views to woodland and beyond.

Dawn said: “In summer we practically live in the conservatory. It was added by the last owner and he’s done it really well because it’s made of stone and wood and looks like it’s always been here. “This type of building would look hideous with a modern PVC conservatory stuck on the side. We love this one.” The couple updated the “country kitchen” look by painting the shaker-style units in contemporary black. It contrasts well with the exposed wood and rustic farmhouse table.

Upstairs, the master bedroom has been given a fantastic makeover in bold red, white and black. The wooden floorboards have been whitewashed to act a bright background for the dark wood furniture. Their amazing bed, which originally belonged to Allan’s parents, is an 18th-century copy of an ornately carved Jacobean design with a half canopy above. It’s dressed simply in white bedding with pillows bearing a romantic red rose motif. The rose theme is continued in the curtains which have the words: “ A rose, a rose, by any nature is still a rose.” The couple have collected some beautiful pieces of furniture from antique showrooms and reclamation yards which are on display throughout the house.

Dawn said: “We love older pieces of furniture because they have such character but we also have a rule it must be functional. We don’t want furniture that has to be ‘kept for good’. “We feel so lucky to be in this house and can’t believe that we’re still only 20 minutes from bustling Glasgow.” “We’ve definitely got the best of both worlds here.”
